Project Space Takes Off!

Every year, hundreds of visitors come to Headlands Center for the Arts to see renowned installations by artists such as David Ireland, Ann Hamilton, Bruce Tomb and John Randolph. Thousands more visit three times annually to tour artists’ studios at our Open House events. With the opening of the Project Space in March 2001 it is now possible for the public to visit artists in the studio five afternoons a week, making HCA a destination for the arts more than ever before. The 1800 sq. ft. Project Space is located on the third floor of Building 944. The public is encouraged to come visit each artist during his/her five-week residency and experience first hand the process of making art.

In its first eight months, twelve artists were featured in the Project Space. Scores of visitors came through on a daily basis. Each artist had the opportunity to present an Artist Talk about his/her work. The Artist Talks drew new audiences and resulted in lively and engaging exchanges. Most impressive was the art created during these residencies. The following are just a few highlights of an impressive inaugural year.
